Infantile Colic

Colic is a condition where there are repeated bouts of excessive crying in a baby who is otherwise healthy and thriving. Colic is common and distressing for both baby and the parents. Colic is very common and the exact cause is unknown.

There are various theories to what actually causes Colic. There is some evidence that sensitivity to cow’s milk may play a part. There are 2 factors to this theory: Protein and Lactose Intolerance/sensitivity.

Cow milk protein content differs from that of Human milk. Basically there are 2 main types of protein in Milk: Casein and Whey Protein. In Cow Milk the ratio is 75% Casein and 25% Whey whereas in Human Milk this ratio is inversed. It is therefore postulated that Protein Intolerance to Cow’s Milk may be associated to Infantile Colic. Unfortunately this factor is too often ignored.

Lactose Intolerance is also a commonly thought cause of Infantile Colic. A change in the baby’s formula or complete cessation of dairy products for the Lactating mother is often recommended. There are also various products on the market that claim to be helpful to break down Lactose. However it is always important for parents to seek advice from their GP or primary Health care practitioner (i.e., your Chiropractor) before giving it to their child.
The other theory held by Chiropractors is that Birth Trauma can be related to Colic. The neck and back vertebrae can go out of alignment due to the stretching and compressing of the body. This can irritate the delicate cranial and spinal nerves which supply the digestive tract. If your delivery included a prolonged pushing stage, forceps or vacuum extraction, or other form of assisted delivery, the chances of a misalignment are great. A misaligned vertebra may lead to interference to the normal function of the Nervous system which in turn may irritate baby’s digestive tract.
Chiropractors will take a full pre and post natal history of your baby, conduct a physical examination and recommend a short course of treatment. Chiropractic Treatment for Infantile colic may generally vary and involve gentle adjustments of the spine, cranial therapy or the use of a Chiropractic mechanical device called an Activator. The treatment is very gentle and most of the time babies tend to relax and even sleep right through it. Your Chiropractor will recommend at home care, some dietary advice when warranted and offer plenty of support.
Chiropractic is geared towards facilitating the body’s response to ailments such as Colic. The adjustments to the spine can allow better spinal function and as a result a more efficient and balanced Nervous System free of Interference.
