Neck Pain

Almost everyone experiences some sort of neck pain or stiffness at one time or another. It is common that we can experience some short lived neck pain after having our head in the wrong position for a prolonged period of time. Quite commonly patients complain of having slept the wrong way or having spent too much time in front of the TV or computer. Most of those are fortunately short lived and have a tendency to resolve on their own. More dramatically however ongoing neck pain may arise from an injury, overuse or after trauma (i.e. whiplash).

The efficacy of chiropractic care for neck pain has been well documented in the UK. A recent study from British Medical Journal 2003 (Apr 26): 326 (7395): 911 suggests that "a hands-on approach to treating neck pain by manual therapy may help people get better faster and at a lower cost than more traditional treatments, according to a new study. After seven and 26 weeks, the study found significant improvements in recovery rates in the manual therapy group compared to the others. For example, at week seven, 68% of the manual therapy group had recovered from their neck pain vs. 51% in the physical therapy group and 36% in the medical care group".

Your neck is a delicate part of your spine which not only supports the weight of the 10-12 pound head but also protects the intricate web of nerves which give life, motion and power to your limbs. Quite frequently neck pain can be accompanied or associated to headaches, frozen shoulders or even carpal tunnel syndrome. Gentle neck treatment including chiropractic adjustments, massage and exercises may help relieve your discomfort and restore your spine's full function.
